For #WorldSnakeDay we’re sharing facts about native Vermont snakes we have here at ECHO: the common garter snake, the eastern ratsnake, and the red-bellied snake.
🌿 The common garter snake is a gardener's friend! They eat pests – including grasshoppers, slugs, and even mice – and protect your crops!
🥚 Garter snakes give birth to live young instead of laying eggs. The average garter snake will have between 15–40 babies during mating season.
🔎 Eastern ratsnakes are threatened in VT. If you identify an eastern ratsnake in the wild, you can report it online at vtherpatlas.org

📏 Red-bellied snakes are the state's smallest snake — the longest documented in VT is only 13 in!
